California edging closer to legalizing sports betting

14 November 2019

No, this is not a typo! The Golden State is in the mix for sports betting.

This week, a ballot was filed for the 2020 election to make sports betting legal in California. Of significance is who put forward the proposed legislation - a coalition of 18 CA Native tribes no less.

This is vital since it's the tribes who have exclusive rights to several types of gambling and therefore hold the key to any movement. On more than one occasion, the tribes had resisted the idea of sports betting due to concerns an expansion would impact on casino gaming. But, finally, a breakthrough! (Hurrah!!)

A significant step in the right direction for the Holy Grail of sports betting

The initiative requires 997k signatures before June to qualify for the election which kinda rules out CA sports betting in the early part of the new year.

Equally, the news is a significant step in the right direction for the Holy Grail of sports betting; as you’re probably aware, with almost 40 million residents in the Golden State, the legal sports betting market in California would become the biggest in the US.
