- Oddsmakers set a points handicap for a game.
- The favorite team gets a minus (-) points value, while the underdog gets a plus (+) points value.
- For example, if Phoenix Suns are -7.0 point favorites against LA Lakers, the spread would be:
Phoenix Suns -7.0
LA Lakers +7.0 - To win a bet on Phoenix Suns, they need to win by at least 8 points. If the game ends 108-100, factoring in the spread, the score would be 101-100 in favor of the Suns.
- For underdog bets, you add the points value to the final score. If the underdog still loses after adding the points, the bet loses.
- Tied scores after factoring in handicaps result in a 'Push', and the initial wager is returned. A spread with a half-point value, like -7.5, avoids a possible push.
