Barstool Casino Legal States

Barstool Casino is legal in the following US states:

Barstool Sportsbook’s debut came in September 2020 in the state of Pennsylvania. Barstool is licensed in each authorized state through the sportsbook’s partnership with American casino and racetrack operator, Penn National Gaming.

Penn National Gaming has secured market access for Barstool Sportsbook in numerous states over the course of the last couple of years, making the New York-based operator one of the more widely available online gambling sites in the US. Funnily enough, however, Barstool Sportsbook was unsuccessful in its bid to enter the New York betting market.

What states is Barstool Sportsbook Legal?

Barstool Sportsbook Pennsylvania

  • Launched: September 2020
  • Land-based partner: Hollywood Casino
  • Regulated by: Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board

The home of Penn National was always the target for Barstool's debut. The rollout of Barstool’s mobile app and online sportsbook in September 2020 was the tenth operator to go live in PA.

Barstool Sportsbook

  • Launched: September 2022
  • Land-based partner: Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway
  • Regulated by: Kansas Racing & Gaming Commission

Kansas is the most recent state where Barstool Sportsbook has launched, doing so on the state's first day of legal sports betting!

Barstool Sportsbook Michigan

  • Launched: January 2021
  • Land-based partner: Greektown Casino Detroit
  • Regulated by: Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB)

In partnership with Greektown Casino Detroit (operated by Penn National), Barstool was among the first wave of sportsbooks to go live when Michigan officially cut the ribbon for online sports betting to commence in January 2021.

Barstool Sportsbook Illinois

  • Launched: March 2021
  • Land-based partner: Hollywood Casino Aurora
  • Regulated by Illinois Gaming Board (IGB)

Legal state number three quickly followed with the rollout of Barstool’ss online sportsbook and mobile betting app in Illinois. Barstool became the state’s sixth sports betting operator. The issue of in-person registration has swayed back and forth since Illinois’s online betting market went live in 2020 - as it stands, bettors must visit a land-based casino owned by Penn National before they can wager remotely.

Barstool Sportsbook Indiana

  • Launched: May 2021
  • Land-based partner: Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg
  • Regulated by Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC)

Barstool launched in time for the Indy 500 and is the second mobile skin of Hollywood Casino. 'Stoolies' in the Hoosier State can download the Barstool Sportsbook app on iOS and Android devices, or, bet using the desktop website.

Barstool Sportsbook Iowa

  • Launched: November 2021
  • Land-based partner: Ameristar Casino in Council Bluffs
  • Regulated by: Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC)

One of its most recent launches, Barstool Sportsbook is happy to finally go live in Iowa.

Barstool Sportsbook Arizona

  • Launched: September 2021
  • Land-based partner: Phoenix Raceway (NASCAR)
  • Regulated by: Arizona Department of Gaming

Barstool Sportsbook raced onto the scene down in the desert, securing its Arizona license through its partnership with the Phoenix Raceway.

Barstool Sportsbook Tennessee

  • Launched: September 2021
  • Land-based partner: None in Tennessee
  • Regulated by: Tennessee Education Lottery (TEL)

Barstool Sportsbook was able to launch in Tennessee without a land-based partner as Tennessee's betting laws are set up in a way that negates the need for operators to have land-based partners.

Barstool Sportsbook Colorado

  • Launched: August 2021
  • Land-based partner: Ameristar Black Hawk
  • Regulated by: Colorado Division of Gaming (CDG)

Barstool Sportsbook was launched in Colorado just in time for the Denver Broncos season-opener, which I'm sure made Colorado-based fans of the Barstool Sports brand quite happy.

Barstool Sportsbook New Jersey

  • Launched: August 2021
  • Land-based partner: Freehold Raceway
  • Regulated by: New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE)

Barstool Sportsbook was the 19th(!) operator to go live in New Jersey with their soft launch, which was limited to just 500 users. However, business is now booming for Barstool Sportsbook in the Garden State.

Barstool Sportsbook Virginia

  • Launched: August 2021
  • Land-based partner: None in Virginia
  • Regulated by: Virginia Lottery (VL)

Without any land-based casinos built in Virginia yet, Penn National was able to secure market access for Barstool Sportsbook without having to partner with a land-based casino in Virginia.

Barstool Sportsbook West Virginia

  • Launched: November 2021
  • Land-based partner: Hollywood Casino Charles Town Races
  • Regulated by: West Virginia Lottery (WVL)

Utilizing the connections of (partial) owners Penn National Gaming, Barstool Sportsbooked secured a licensing partnership with Hollywood Casino Charles Town Races, who also happen to be owned by Penn National Gaming.

Barstool Sportsbook Legal States: The Future

Barstool Sportsbook New York

Barstool Sportsbook submitted a joint bid with Fanatic Sportsbook, alongside the primary applicant Kambi, to gain market access in New York. However, they were among the four failed bids, being beaten out by Kambi's other joint bid as well as another joint bid led by FanDuel Sportsbook.

Given Barstool's heavy ties to the city and state of New York, we certainly don't expect this to be the end of their attempts to enter the Empire State.

Barstool Sportsbook: What to expect

Nick Albert

The hype surrounding the launch of Barstool superseded any sportsbook launch that has gone before. And justifiably too, this is Barstool Sports, after all. But how good is Barstool Sportsbook, the product?

For starters, it truly reflects the fun and exciting feel of the Barstool Sports brand. The familiar faces of Dave Portnoy and Dan “Big Cat” Catz are used throughout the site to front promo offers and daily boosts and in general, keep the Barstool Sports Brand in the mind of the user.

On top of this, unique features like ‘Bet with Barstool’, which allows you to pick wagers based on the predictions of Barstool personalities, and ‘Quick Pick 6’, which sees Barstool auto-generate six different bets from six events, are innovative betting features we’ve yet to experience.

And with leading sportsbook provider, Kambi, running the show behind the scenes, users of Barstool have an online betting platform both highly responsive and easy to use.

Time will tell whether Barstool can prise enough bettors away from industry leaders FanDuel and DraftKings. But a strong product coupled with the company’s licensing agreement with Penn National points towards Barstool becoming a serious player in the sports betting sphere.
