PointsBet is now legal and operating in New York following full approval from the state's regulator.

On January 25, 2022, PointsBet became the sixth online sports betting operator to go live in New York.

Back in November 2021, PointsBet was part of a successful joint bid to enter the New York sports betting market, one that saw fellow operators Caesars Sportsbook, WynnBET, Resorts World, Rush Street Interactive, and primary applicant Kambi all gain access to the New York betting market as well.

The New York State Gaming Commission awarded PointsBet its license to operate back in November 2021, with the goal of launching its betting services in NY before Super Bowl LVI on February 13, 2022, which happens to be the most popular sports event to bet on in the US. With its NY launch on January 25, 2022, PointsBet was able to meet that goal with plenty of time to spare.

What took PointsBet so long to launch in NY?

There were certain logistical hurdles to overcome before online sports betting was officially launched in New York. More precisely, there was work to be done to guarantee that the commercial casinos that house the betting companies' servers had the necessary infrastructure to do so.

The final roadblocks were thankfully sorted out well ahead of schedule, which allowed the New York State Gaming Commission to give the green light for online sports betting to begin on the morning of January 8th, 2022. Since then, five of the nine operators in New York have received the approval to begin accepting wagers online.
